ISBAR tutuksi Oulun seudun yhteispäivystyksessä : Koulutus ISBAR-menetelmän käytöstä Oulun seudun yhteispäivystyksen henkilökunnalle

Systematic and controlled reporting is one of the key factors in ensuring patient safety and prevent-ing adverse events. Studies have estimated that up to 70 per cent of adverse events in the health care are caused by the disruption in the flow of information and misunderstandings. ISBAR is the name of a very widely used consulting and reporting method. Results in the previous studies have shown that the use of the ISBAR method improves patient safety and facilitates the nursing staff’s communication. The client of our thesis was accident and emergency department of Northern Os-trobothnia Hospital District. The purpose of the thesis was to plan and put into practice a training session for the staff of the accident and emergency department about how to use the ISBAR report and consultation method. Our aim was to improve the patient safety by standardizing the staff’s communication practice. The emergency unit does not have a standard communication method in use yet even though system-atic and controlled reporting is one of the keystones of patient safety. While searching for the information about the ISBAR Method, how to use it, how to organize a training for adults and also about the patient safety, we created a theoretical framework that we used as a data base for our thesis and the training session. For the theoretical framework we searched information from previous studies and theses, Nurse’s Association, Finnish and interna-tional publications and also from the literature related to the topic. We held the training session six times so that as much staff as possible could be trained to use the method. In the end of the training sessions we collected feedback about the quality of our training. As a result of our thesis and the training sessions the staff of the emergency unit of the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District has now been educated to use the ISBAR Method and the reporting in the emergency unit has been standardized better. In the future it is easier to create, for example, a form or information system for the reporting since the most of the staff have already been told about a standard, systematic and controlled method of reporting.
