Blood culture is an important analysis of clinical microbiology and it is used in the diagnostics of sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in which the bacteria have increased severely in the patient's blood stream. A biomedical laboratory scientist usually takes blood culture samples to blood culture bottles containing growth medium. The blood culture bottles are placed in the blood culture machine that alerts the positive result automatically. Asepsis is an important part of taking blood culture samples because the bacteria from patient's skin can reach blood culture causing a false positive result. The objective of this thesis was to produce a website study material that gives information about collecting of blood culture samples. The material is for the students of biomedical laboratory science of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The purpose was also to learn about developing a study material and filming a learning video. The form of the thesis is a development project. The study material of blood culture is made on www.weebly.com and it includes general information of blood culture, pictures and a video of how to take blood culture samples. We sent the study material to the students of biomedical laboratory science by email and asked them to give some feedback. According to the feedback the webpage is written concisely. The students thought that the educational video is high-quality and professional. They also gave us advice on how to improve the study material. In our opinion the study material will be useful to our degree programme. It could be improved for example by adding information about taking samples with syringe or from child patients.
