In the past, nurses of neonatal intensive care units took care of several newborn babies in the same space. In our thesis, we call this space an open unit. Hospitals began to develop their operations based on experience and studies, which led to the development of family rooms. The university hospital in our area is moving from an open unit to family rooms in the neonatal intensive care unit. This change is the reason we decided to study its benefits for parents.

The purpose of our thesis was to find out, with the help of a descriptive literature review, how parents benefited from the family room in the neonatal intensive care unit. Our thesis aimed to gather information about the benefits of the family room for parents and create an overall picture that students and nursing professionals can utilize in their work.

Based on the criteria we set, we selected nine studies carried out in different countries, and from these studies, we raised seven themes using theme analysis. Research results on the benefits experienced by parents were scarce, which is why we ended up with the chosen viewpoints. The themes that emerged were a sense of control and security, parental responsibility, privacy, reduction of stress, and impact on attendance and closeness.

Based on the research results, the researchers concluded that the family room benefits parents in several different areas. When choosing studies, we noticed that the perspective of the support person was nearly not considered at all, which is why we would suggest it as one of the subjects of further research. Based on the research results, the role of the spouse is significant.
