This thesis examines the possibilities of conversion from beef production to dairy production of agricultural cooperative Ukkola from economical point of view. The current profitability of beef production has made it mandatory to think of a new production line. This thesis goes through the new investments needed and already existing machinery that can be used at the new production line and also the sufficiency of existing fodder-growing capacity at the new production line. To help in the farm feature cost estimates a ready cost estimate for one robot cowshed was asked.

This thesis combines the facts that need to be accounted for in farm development, like the development of cattle farming in the past years and some profitability calculation. Concerning the farming construction different types of cowsheds and farming machinery were looked into. An essential part of farm development is fodder-growing and the actions taken in it. The knowledge base used in this thesis also tells about farm production legislation.

The main conclusion is that the investment is not possible without additions to the capital or cutting of expenses although the financial basis of the farm is positive. The northern location of Finland and difficult production conditions in comparison to the rest of the world need more durable structions, machinery and equipment. Due to these conditions a profitable operation might be impossible to achieve financially because of the great starting investment that is needed.

There is also a version that reduces the farming construction costs so that the investment would be possible to achieve. So in conclusion the conversion from beef production to dairy production would be possible if the costs of farming construction could be reduced.
