The purpose of this thesis was to create a development proposal for Säkkinen farm. The farm is located in Pudasjärvi which is located in the C3 P3 support area. Säkkinen farm is a traditional family farm and produces milk.

The objective of this thesis is to create a development proposal for Säkkinen farm based on a wish list. The wish list was created so that the farm could plan what they wanted from the new cowshed. Also the new cowsheds are usually built as the farmer wishes them to be. We wanted to study if all of the farmer’s wishes could be realized economically profitably. The wish list was also a foundation to the conversations with different companies that could build the new cowshed. Profitability of the new cowshed was also a big part of this thesis.

The main part of the wish list was a free-stall cowshed for 80 dairy cows. This thesis was made to study how the wished cowshed could be made and how to make it economically profitably.

Economic calculations for this thesis were made with Likwi-software. The basis of the calculations were Säkkinen farm’s financial records. The costs of the cowshed and everything around it were gathered by interviewing different companies.

As a result a development proposal for Säkkinen farm was created. The cowshed would be the wished chilly cowshed for 80 dairy cows. The old cowshed is renovated so that the young cattle could be raised there. Calculations showed that the investment wouldn’t be reasonable in the wished way. Instead if the number of the dairy cows is lowered to 65, needed new arable area is acquired by renting and renovation of the new cowshed’s yard is handled in a different way, the investment would become profitably.
