The profitability of agriculture in Finland has decreased during the recent years, so farms should search for ways to develop their operations to maintain their economic stability. The mandator for this thesis was the farm Uutela, which is located in Northern Ostrobothnia. It produces cereals for fodder by using ordinary cultivating methods.

The goal of this thesis was to find a solution to increase the economical profitability of farm Uutela and to improve cultivating methods for example in form of finding a new crop which is both economically profitable, and has good impact on farm’s crop rotation. Especially currently poor crop rotation of the farm needed improvement. Also co-operation with nearby dairy farms has been taken into consideration.

The thesis was made from theoretical standpoint using internet sources, agricultural literature and by examining farm’s production facilities and machinery. Economic statistics were examined with help of an accounting program. Based on theoretical information field mustard was chosen to be the new possible crop because of its existing distribution channel. By examining economic calculation it was pointed out that field mustard cannot provide improvement on economic state, but the positive effect it brings up to the crop rotation is much needed. It seems like notable economic improvements require co-operation with nearby dairy farms.
