My thesis was the result of the need on my home farm’s approaching generation change. The present tie stall barn of the farm requires too much work. The farm’s transition to successor would take place during 2014. The new entrepreneur wants to improve the milk production. The objective is to turn the work place of two people into a work place for one person. My subject of my development task is a tie stall barn built in 1970’s. The goal is to turn it into a more effective unit at an affordable price. I wanted to find out how to obtain productive and reasonably low-cost production facility, without building a new cowshed. In my thesis I found out if it is more profitable to renovate the old tie stall barn than to build a new cowshed. I also wanted to find out how productivity improves after the investment and what kind of working time saving it would result into. In my thesis I present a clear alternative to over indebtedness, so that the cowshed can be simultaneously functional and affordable. The thesis was based on a theoretical framework, in which I studied about renovation. This allowed me to see what kind of things should be taken into account on renovation of the old stall barn. In my thesis I interviewed a few farmers, farm relief workers, as well as various sales representatives. I used the results of interviews for choosing what systems I will use in my tied stall barn. I collected price lists for five different options, each of them reduced the required working hours. Amount of working hours affects profitability of milk production. Often farmers do not calculate own hourly wages and it is good to react critically to the results. Renovating of the old tie stall barn is profitable. According to my research my selected decision reduces handwork significantly and the tie stall barn will be an effective and productive milk production unit for one person.
