This thesis is about what is the difference between mainstream and underground music in Finnish music magazines. I interviewed three music magazine representative and did research of four Finnish music magazines. I chose two numbers of each magazine. As my production I did a television documentary about the metal scene in Oulu. Production and thesis complete each other while I decided to do content analysis starting from well known teen magazine Suosikki going through Soundi and Inferno ending to metal magazine Miasma.

The purpose was to find out the difference and definition between mainstream and underground music. Turned out the difference is not at all that clear. To one kind of music consumer different kinds of music is mainstream and vice verca. I got to the results by reading magazines and by interviews.

Thesis can be used as a research material for music journalism studies. This thesis does not have a client.
