A cow`s first milk after calving is colostrum. It is important for the calf because of the antibodies it contains. At birth, the calf does not have the necessary protection against pathogens. Colostrum must be obtained at least four hours after birth, and its quality has its own criteria. High-quality colostrum plays a big role in the calf`s future life. We used in the research some measured data of commission farm. They had results from five years, from almost every calving. For the measurements they used refractometer. With the help of the data, it was possible for us to find out what affects good quality colostrum and what affect colostrum has on the calf`s future. We investigated among other things the effect of the season and the production season, as well as the importance of the dry period. We created different graphs to illustrate the results. One of our main focuses was on the importance of the dry period and how it is possible to improve the adequacy and quality of the farm`s colostrum. We noticed that the longer cow had been dry, the more colostrum it produced. We also investigated the effect of colostrum on the future milking-out period of the calf. In the research, it was not possible to examine every factor affecting colostrum, because the information had been obtained from only one farm. However, we strove to look at the results from more impressive perspectives so that the work would be useful for the commission farm. We also noticed that even with small actions it is possible to improve the quality of the cattle and thus create healthy and functional dairy farm.
