The subject of our thesis is about the willingness for staying in the optical field. We made a qualitative survey research for opticians and optometrists who are currently working in the optical industry. The purpose of our thesis is to find out the reasons for staying in the optical field. With our survey we have searched about which are the main reasons for leaving the industry and also which are the main reasons for staying in the optical field. Our goal is to search problems that make an optician consider a change of industry. We carried out our research as a quantitative survey. We had an electronic structured survey where we gave the respondents ready-made answer options. We did our survey completely anonymously. We distributed the survey through the newsletter of the Association of Professional Optometrists of Finland. Also we delivered our survey in the Facebook group for optometrists and opticians in Finland. We also sent our survey as an e-mail for the large companies of the optician industry in Finland (Silmäasema, Instru optiikka, Synsam and Specsavers). We received 351 responses forour survey in total. We analyzed the results by using Webropol’s own analysis program.In our research we found out that over half of the optometrists and opticians who responded to the survey (65.8%) have considered changing field at some point in their career. The results revealed that the biggest reasons for changing industry have been dissatisfaction of one's working hours or salary, a constant rush at both in the eye examinations and in the store, as well as too hard sale targets set by the employers, and excessive commercialism. The biggest reasons for staying in the industry were interesting and versatile work, nice colleagues and successful customer encounters.The survey results of our thesis can be used for the development of the optical industry. It is good to analyze the main problems that emerged with the help of our survey and look for solutions so we can keep optometrists and opticians in the working life in the future. If the problem areas are noticed, we can improve the attraction of the optical industry and also increase the well-being in the work of optometrists and opticians.
