The purpose of the thesis was to examine the types of emotions and experiences of shame that individuals with PCOS have experienced in relation to the syndrome and the importance of peer support in dealing with emotions. The thesis was done in co-operation with the gynecological patient organization Korento ry.

The research data was collected using an electronic questionnaire. The study used a quantitative and qualitative research methodology. The data were analyzed using statistically descriptive analysis for the quantitative research method and for the qualitative research method using data-based content analysis.

There were many different emotions associated with PCOS. Experiences were naturally influenced by the respondent's situation in life, values, and desires. Mostly negative feelings were associated with PCOS and its symptoms, although positive feelings were also expressed. By far majority of the responses were related to physical changes. Most respondents had sought peer support and found it mostly useful. Respondents perceived peer support even better than support received from health care. The most popular ways for obtaining peer support were social media groups and peer support forums, such as anonymous discussion forums. The findings were in line with foreign studies conducted earlier on the subject.

As a further research topic, it could be useful to explore, for example the importance of support and attitudes provided by healthcare professionals to a PCOS person's experiences with the syndrome and their own symptoms.
