According to the strategy for 2006–2010 for the Service Laboratory of the School of Health and Social Care at Oulu University of Applied Sciences, one of the goals is to create the up-to-date Quality Manuals by the year 2010. Since the Service Laboratory lacked procedure documents and proper work instructions related to urine and coagulation analysis, the Quality Manual had to be updated.

The purpose of this project-like bachelor’s thesis was to create instruction folders for the students responsible for the urine analysis and blood coagulation tests at the Service Laboratory. The practical aims are to enhance self-monitoring and reliability of the tests in the Service Laboratory. Furthermore, the instruction folders can be used as a model for creating documents of the same kind at the Service Laboratory. Quality management is an important part of a biomedical scientist’s daily work. The learning objective was to enhance knowledge of quality management.

The documents were created in accordance with ISO/ IEC 17025 and EN ISO 15189 standards. The material in the folders was tested by the biomedical students. The folders got their final form on the basis of the feedback received from the tests.

The folders were created to be a part of the Quality Manual for the Service Laboratory of the School of Health and Social Care at Oulu University of Applied Sciences. They include task descriptions, descriptions of the responsibilities of the personnel in the laboratory, working instructions, and a model for deviation reports and use-of-device-reports.

The Quality Manual covers all actions, and it ensures the required quality of the laboratory procedures. The folders assist students to produce reliable and reproducible results of the analyses. Biomedical laboratory scientists should have more courage to be involved in the development process of quality management. Thus, for example, updated instructions would be more user-friendly and practical.
