The subject of this thesis is the protection of the private life of public figures. The aim of this thesis is to find out what the protection of private life means, who public figures are and what kind of protection they have in their private life. The thesis also introduces how the private life of ordinary peoples differs from the protection of the private life of public figures. The research method is legal dogmatic. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on the Constitution, the Criminal Code, government propositions, international treaties and literature related to this topic, produced by experts familiar with the protection of the private life. The thesis introduces the rulings of the Supreme Court and the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights concerning the protection of the private life. In addition, in the thesis there are also complaints made to the Council for Mass Media, which is a self-regulatory body established by the media. Everyone has the right to private life and this also applies to public figures. While public figures are publicly on display to the public, it does not mean that they have no protection of private life at all. Particularly in the core of the protection of private life, the most sensitive and intimate aspects of private life are often protected. The current law guarantees that ordinary people as well as public figures are at the same level in the protection of private life. According to the law, the only group of people that are separated from this group is ascendant people because their protection of private life is more narrow than others. Although the law does not specify what kind of protection of the private life public figures have, the case-law has greatly affected the protection of the private life of public figures. The case-law has strongly considered how a public figure has appeared in the public and what kind of things this person has shared with the public. A person of publicity can thus have a broad impact on the protection of his or her private life through his or her own actions. By freely telling about his or her private life, a public figure reduces his or her own privacy. Indeed, the public figure can be regarded as the greatest influencer on the extent of the protection of his or her private life.
