This study covered creativity in children’s music studies, and its objective was to increase knowledge of creativity as well as to find out how a music teacher could support children’s musical creative self-expression. Creativity is the central topic for this study because of the interest in how the creativity of children would better elicited at music lessons.

Different materials were widely studied when writing this thesis. The study materials included literature related to creativity, interviews, internet sources and Rondo magazine. The sources were large since it is a wide topic how to influence children’s creativity, and the topic was studied from many perspectives and almost every point of view required its own sources.

According to this thesis the teacher should be child friendly so that the creativity in the child could come out. The teacher should stimulate the child to the subjects of the music lessons. The source materials also insinuated that rules may support creative self-impression of the child. It was surprising how much imagination can be used in music teaching. These findings were concluded by analyzing the interviews and materials.

This study introduces practical ways how a teacher can support creativity at instrument lessons as well as how the atmosphere at the lessons influence creativity.

It would be interesting to study further how insightful learning and creative teaching methods affect creativity. Another good perspective would be making music without notes by playing by heart since the lack of restrictive notes leads better to creative self-expression.
