This thesis has been made for the needs of author’s own enterprise. This enterprise is called Syöte Mushroom and Herb Limited Partnership and it cultivates winter garlic in Syöte area in Pudasjärvi. Pudasjärvi is situated in Northern Finland. Winter is there usually very snowy and growing season very short.

The aim of this thesis was to explore the general basics of professional cultivation of winter garlic and also to find out the experiences and practical solutions used especially from Northern Finland’s point of view. The second aim was to find out varieties of winter garlic suitable for short growing season of Northern Finland. Also the availability of those varieties in professional scale was to be clarified. One aim was also to make a cropping plan for author’s own fields.

In the theory part of this thesis, the basics of cultivation of winter garlic were explored by means of literature and internet sources. Empirical data was collected by making interviews by phone with garlic farmers from Northern Finland. Also some experts from other areas of Finland were interviewed.

The result of this work is a report of the basics of cultivation of winter garlic and its suitability to the circumstances of Northern Finland. Farmers’ interviews gave valuable information about practical methods and solutions of managing the cultivation successfully. Also some information of varieties suitable for northern environment was collected. Also a cropping plan for author’s own fields was created.
