Ikääntyneiden kaltoinkohtelu : Kuvakortit työvälineenä kaltoinkohtelun puheeksiottamisessa

Maltreatment against the elderly is a phenomenon that has been taken under the radar not until lately. Maltreatment is defined as intentional violence or harm caused by another person. Maltreatment appears in many forms. It can be physical, mental, financial, sexual or spiritual. Additionally, neglecting care and help and intentionally falsely accomplished pharmacological treatment are also forms of maltreatment. The professionals in the social and health care who work among the elderly are in the key position regarding preventing, recognizing and intervening in maltreatment. The main purpose of this project-based thesis of ours was to create face cards for tools to be used in speaking about maltreatment of the elderly. Our qualitative goal was to create diverse, clear, customer orientated, emotive and also ethical face cards regarding the maltreatment and a instruction manual containing instructions about how to use these face cards that also includes theoretical information on maltreatment and about its many forms. The aim was to produce a tool that could help rooting the subject matter, the maltreatment of the elder people, in the work of the nurses. Additionally, one of our goals was to reinforce knowledge among the nurses about the maltreatment of the elder people and the many forms of it. This project was put together in co-operation with Oulu’s Mäntykoti, Oulu’s women shelter, and Suvanto Ry. Our client was Juuri-project. The photographs used in the face cards were collected from the regional photographing contest conducted by us. We chose 30 photographs that were made into face cards. Our co-operators were present in the selection process. The photographers signed a contract that would allow the photographs to be in the use of Juuri-project. The instruction manual was planned and created in the project group. It contains theoretical information about maltreatment along with the instructions for the face cards. In the autumn of 2014 the face cards were pre-tested by the nurses in Oulu’s Mäntykoti. After pre-testing the nurses reviewed the face cards and the instruction manual using a feedback blanket. According to the feedback both the face cards and the instruction manual were a success. In the future the face cards and the instruction manual could be in use as a tool to bring up the conversation about the maltreatment in different kinds of small groups but also in personal efforts. Both products are also eligible for different age groups apart from just the elderly. During the making of the project many questions about further development were raised. The use of the face cards, their benefits and hindrances could be researched and evaluated in longer time frame. Conducting a teaching event, an instruction video or a internet site could be a way to inform the staff on how to use the face cards. In addition, the face cards could be in the use of immigrational health care. For this purpose an English version of the manual would be essential.
