This Bachelor’s thesis dealt with the use of mental training in piano playing studies as well as among piano playing students at university of applied sciences. This thesis clarified how much mental training is taught to students, which strategies of mental training are used, the usefulness of using mental training, do the students wish more education on mental training, and will they themselves teach mental training to their own pupils.

Professional literature and researches related to music and performing as well as piano playing guides written by well-known pianists were used in the theory part. The data was gathered through questionnaires with the help of Google Drive program in the internet. The link to the questionnaire was sent to piano students of university of applied sciences via email.

The first part of the thesis considers mental training from a general point of view, its use in different aspects of piano playing, mental training strategies of well-known pianists and my own experiences of mental training. The second part analyses the answers of the questionnaires.

The results show that the mental training was very rarely or never mentioned to the students. However, the students have used mental training by themselves some times and got a lot of benefit from it to their playing. Generally, mental training among students is considered as a very necessary subject and they wish more education for it. 90% of the students answering the questionnaire would participate in mental training education if it was offered.
