Nuoruusmuistoja : Musiikki kuntoutumisen menetelmänä muistisairaiden naisten kerhossa

Music is an excellent aid in rehabilitative nursing. It can be used for people of all ages and sessions with music are easy to organize. In the past few decades research information has increased and therefore music has been used more in nursing. In my project the target group was demented elderly women. My project belonged to the project called Eheä Elämän Ehtoo, and my co-operation partner was Kempele domiciliary care.

The purpose of the project was to produce a high quality music group for the demented women’s club in the domiciliary care of Kempele. The goal of the music group was to encourage the staff to use music and singing as a treatment method in Kempele domiciliary care. Another goal was to uplift club members’ mood, refresh their memory, create sense of security and make them feel good.

I gained knowledge about the subject through interviewing the co-operation partner and studying literature. Based on this information I made the plan for the music groups. In the demented women’s club there were six elderly women. All of these six women were diagnosed with a memory disorders. Music group was held five times. When the last music group had been held, I gathered feedback from three nurses of Kempele domiciliary care.

The music groups were made from the perspective of elderly women. In music groups we listened to music, sang, played instruments and we also reminisced about old times with the help of music. Based on the feedback music groups were very useful for club members and nurses. In their opinion the music groups were a success.

A suggestion for further research would be to study the value of the music groups in Kempele domiciliary care. The research could especially study if more music and singing was used in nursing and what the effect had been.
