The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of the emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department in encountering mental health patients and the further training needs the staff believe that they have. The aim of the study is to obtain empirical data from basic-level and advanced-level emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department. The research questions are: How do members of the emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department experience encounters with mental health patients in an emergency care situation? What kinds of needs for further training on the subject of encountering mental health patients do they believe they have? The results of this study can be employed by the emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department when preparing staff guidelines on the topic of encountering mental health patients in emergency care situations. The research data for this qualitative study has been collected by using questionnaires with open-ended questions. The respondents consisted of 12 members of the emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department. The analysis method was content analysis. The results of the study show that the emergency nursing staff at Jokilaaksot Rescue Department face a number of different mental health problems and associated challenges in their work. Many staff members feel that they need further training on the subject of encountering and treating mental health patients. Consequently, training, as well as expertise in psychiatry, are tools that provide them with confidence in patient encounters. The emergency nursing staff find it necessary to improve areas such as the functioning of multi-professional co-operation and professionalism in patient encounters.
