We read studies about children and found that there were lots of studies about children’s hospital fears and less studies about children’s positive experiences in hospital. The subscriber of this study was a children’s medical ward of Oulu University Hospital.

The aim of the thesis was to describe preschoolers’ sources of positive experiences in hospital and their proposals how to keep up the good spirit in hospital.

This study was qualitative. Theme interviews were used as a material collection method. The informants were five children aged 4-6 years. The interviews were content analyzed.

Findings revealed that most important things in hospital for the preschoolers were toys. The company of parents and siblings was also very important for children when they were in hospital. All the informants thought that hospital clowns were lovely and they liked clowns’ visits. Findings also revealed what kind of expectations children had about keeping up the good spirit in hospital.

With the help of this study nursing staff and students of nursing can develop nursing and thus enhance children’s good spirit in hospital. Nursing staff can also improve their professional readiness to work with children when they know what kind of things preschoolers like.
