What is a good curriculum and what should a teacher be like? This thesis studies the specifics of a curriculum for show dance/dancing, as well as the significance of the teacher’s role. Show dance/dancing is a form of performing dances. Therefore the significant sectors of a curriculum are drama education, performance/performing and improvisation. Furthermore, show dance is a competitive sport so it is important to study the pros and cons of competing and competitions.

This thesis consists of elements from literature on pedagogy and performing arts, my own experience as a dance teacher, as well as the opinions and thoughts of professionals, experts and enthusiasts in the dancing field.

The study’s aim is to provide a selection of perspectives and practical ideas for the teaching and education of show dance/dancing. The ideas and views presented in the thesis are also applicable to all other dance forms outside of show dance/dancing.
