This thesis studied the process of movement improvisation and how to teach and learn it for adults; also how a person improvises and how improvisation can be learned. The thesis consists of theory and pedagogical parts: the pedagogical part is an intensive course aimed for an adult basic group. In the pedagogical part it was tested with a basic group with appropriate teaching ways to get into movement through movement improvisation. The students got to study and to feel their own body, their opportunities of movements and their own created routes for their dance.

The concepts of pedagogy, didactics and methodology and also thoughts of arts and mind well-ness as well as the source literature are in the theoretical part. In the theoretical research of movement improvisation it is presented the improvisation process and the process without im-provisation and also improvisation teaching and learning.

The movement improvisation course opened the learner understanding, interest and encourage-ment to succeed in body movement as well as it influenced positively on the learner's personal psychological characteristics. From the learning perspective the students experienced psychomo-tor, social-emotional and cognitive learning. From the teaching perspective teaching of movement improvisation is an interesting adventure in the improvisation world that is a continuous and changing process and leads teaching in any direction. During the research process I have dis-covered how important it is to get feedback from students and to hear their successes, difficul-ties, fears and how certain exercises are felt in the body. It is very important to give a clear in-struction in teaching and to interact with students during training.
