Lapsipotilas - apua! : Lasten ensihoito-opas sairaankuljettajille

Background: Children form their own special group in emergency nursing. Children are the most difficult patient group to approach because of their physical and psychological differences compared to adults. In emergency nursing the child patients are very rare, so the ambulance staff do not have a routine for meeting and taking care of children. Due to our own work experiences we found out that it is very challenging to face child patients. That is why we decided to do a treatment instruction booklet about children’s emergency nursing for ambulance staff. We did our bachelor’s thesis as a project.

Aim: The purpose of our project was to make a laminated, high quality and pocket size treatment instruction booklet that is suitable for changing weather conditions. The purpose of the booklet was to help the ambulance staff to face child patients. Our long-term practical aim was to improve the treatment of child patients.

Methods: We made inquiry with questionnaires for our partner, an ambulance service in Oulainen. With this inquiry we found out what where the most common and the hardest child patient cases which they had dealt with. We decided to include these cases in our treatment instruction booklet. We also got advice on which would be the most useful size and shape of the booklet. These results directed our work during this project.

Results: We produced a A4-sized treatment instruction booklet, which is A6-sized and it is laminated. It includes normal numerical values of children’s vital functions in different age groups, doses of different medicines, Glascow Coma Scale, resuscitation instructions, a picture for evaluating the burns and instructions for children’s hydration. Our partner was very pleased with our treatment instruction booklet, so we did not have to do big changes for the content.

Conclusion: During this project we found out that there is not very much researches about children’s emergency nursing. The ambulance staff felt that they would need more education of child patient treatment. These could be good subjects for the bache-lor’s theses in the future.
