One of the main goals in the Degree Programme in Emergency Nursing is to understand 14-lead ECG, and also to be able to recognize different kind of cardiac arrhythmias. The 14-lead ECG is an important tool used in the assessment of the patient’s currents status, and therefore its accurate interpretation is of utmost importance.

The interpretation of ECG is taught in Oulu University of Applied Sciences on various different courses. In addition a small portion of the studying is completed in self-studying.

Our thesis is a research and development project, which produced an electronic-learning material about the basics of the ECG. The electronic-learning material consists of a theory package and some questions related to the information provided. The theories provided are based on reliable and current sources. The information on the theory package is assembled with the aid of mathematics and physics, and it is presented in images and texts, and by taking various styles of learning into account.

The main purpose of our product is to support the paramedic students in the learning of the interpretation of the ECG, and also to aid them to associate the proper connections of ECG and the functions of the heart.
