My clients asked me to study possibilities to improve the functionality of the calves’ and heifers’ living space. Achrén farm, my client, is a dairy farm in Pöytyä, Southwest Finland. They have had the farm since 1990s and the current barn is built in the 2000s. Cow house has been fixed a few times, but the young cattle barn is in original condition. This work addresses renovation of the young cattle barn and calf and heifer welfare.   Calf and heifer welfare has been of increasing interest in the last few years and new ideas come up continuously. New ideas come from abroad and their functionality in the changing Finnish climate conditions need to be tested.   The object of this thesis was to get acquainted with current calf and heifer management practices and to find solutions that fit my client. Purpose was also to find out the costs of the changes and whether they could be implemented in my client’s farm.   In this work I have got acquainted with Finnish and international written references about calf and heifer welfare and living spaces. In addition, I have studied heifer outsourcing and its demands and possibilities. Also my clients background information was used in order to find the best solutions for them.   I narrowed my research into three alternatives and then considered their costs and execution. In the results I consider the actual effects that changes would have on the work and finances. All alternatives are possible, but they demand different future plans from the farm. The first option is to repair the current young cattle barn, the second is to increase the number of animals and build more shelters, the third option is to repair the current young cattle barn and outsource the heifers.   Currently the best option is to repair the current young cattle barn. It combines both the animal welfare and work efficiency. It is good for a short time period and can be implemented right away. Two other options require plans for a longer time period, but they are also good options for the farm.
