EvästeasetuksetAim The study aimed to describe and explain the self-assessed gerontological nursing competence levels of Finnish nursing students and factors relating to it. Design A cross-sectional study design, reported by The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology guidelines. Methods Data were collected with the GeroNursingCom instrument, which features 53 items relating to 11 competence factors. The K-clustering technique and the Chi-squared, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney tests were used to analyse the data. Results Seven hundred and ninety-nine nursing students from nine randomly selected higher education institutions were invited to participate in 2019. Three distinct student profiles were identified according to the data (N = 274): Profile A—lower intermediate competence (23.1% of students), Profile B—intermediate competence (45.8%) and Profile C—high competence (31.1%). The strongest competence area for all students was appreciative encounter and interaction, and the weakest was supporting the older person’s sexuality. Nursing students have diverse backgrounds and their overall competence in gerontological nursing is shaped in part by their previous education, motivations and work experience. Relevance to clinical practice Recognizing students’ different gerontological nursing competence profiles enables the implementation of targeted education to improve competence in clinical practice.

Aim The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between sensory impairment and home care client's received care time. Design A cross-sectional multi-source study. Methods Data from a self-reported staff survey on care time allocation were merged with registry data from the Resident Assessment Instrument registry (n = 1477). The data were collected during 1 week from 17 home care units in Finland in October 2021. The relationship between sensory impairment and clients received care time was examined using linear regression analyses. Results The linear regression analyses showed that having vision impairment alone increased care time, while dual sensory impairment resulted in decreased received care time. Hearing impairment alone was not statistically significantly associated with care time. Conclusion The holistic care need of home care clients with dual sensory impairment may not be adequate. To ensure equality and the individually tailored care of clients, further attention must be paid to clients with sensory impairments, especially those with dual sensory impairment. Furthermore, the competence of home care workers to encounter and communicate with clients with sensory impairment must be developed to support the holistic care. Implications for the patient care The sensory impairments of home care clients must be identified in time and considered in care planning and encountering clients. Impact As there is a risk that clients with dual sensory impairment are not able to fully express themselves, it is imperative that further attention is paid to clients with sensory impairments, to better understand and support this vulnerable group. Increased awareness and continuous education are needed to better identify and support home care clients with sensory impairment. Reporting Method The study adheres to the STROBE reporting guidelines. Patient or public contribution No patient or public contribution.

Disruption of economies, caused by the Internet and communications technology and its effect to other industries, has had and will continue to have severe effect to the existing business models and production of goods for the upcoming decades. In addition, increasing complexity of global problems calls for the need of new problemsolving competences.Complex problem solvers, knowledge workers, are more and more working by collaborative structures, where the solution creation benefits from multiprofessional way of working. This study is focusing on a trend of how higher education, especially in the area of computer science and engineering, is responding to the challenge of educating collaborative knowledge workers to a knowledge intensive work environment. The study was performed by a literature review covering publications indexed by the Scopus bibliographic database to find relevant research articles and reviews published between the years 2000 and 2016. The results indicate a steadily growing interest towards multi- and interdisciplinary education. Most of the interest is indicated among the health care, medicine and nursing, and social sciences disciplines, while the interest among engineering and computer science is a clear minority. The results of this article can be used to study further the unused potential of engineering and computer science for the multi- and interdisciplinary education.

Objectives: According to current research, patient handling is not universally taught in academic nursing programs in Europe. Miscellaneous patient handling education may expose students and novice health care workers to occupational hazards, especially if the evidence-based contents of safe patient handling are not recognized. Health care workers deal with high physical workloads daily, which points out the importance of evidence-based curricula contents from the early phases of education. The aim of this study was to describe the patient handling education and to analyse the differences in curricula among higher education institutions (HEIs) in Europe. Material and Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted in HEIs educating health care professionals in Europe. The data was collected through a Webropol questionnaire consisting of structured and open-ended questions. Results: Only 68.4% of the respondents stated that they have a framework that guides the patient handling education. Additionally, some answers referred to guidelines that are not adequate to be referred to as evidence-based guidelines on patient handling. There is variation in emphasizing workplace safety and risk assessment issues in the curricula, and variation in teaching of assistive aids. Conclusions: Currently the patient handling education in the studied HEIs does not meet the requirements of evidence-based practice. The establishment of a European-wide framework, including both theoretical and practical training for safe patient handling is needed. The inclusion of risk assessment and workplace safety issues is essential to improve the risk management knowledge and skills and further avoid work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Objective: Elderly people often use several medicines, which increases risks for side effects and adverse effects. Moreover, most reported adverse events in healthcare are associated with medication. The aim was to describe nursing staffs’ perceptions about and the factors related to the actualization of safety checks, monitoring and documentation in the medication process in long-term elderly care. Methods: This was a cross-sectional quantitative, questionnaire-based study. The response rate, among all nurses working in long-term elderly care wards in a Finnish healthcare district, was 39.4% (n = 492). Results: The results indicate that some safety checks and monitoring guidelines are often violated during the medication administration process, but most nurses self-reportedly maintained good practice in medication documentation. Conclusions: The results suggest needs to review training in pharmacology, infection control, and medication calculations during pre-qualification and continuing education, and to ensure nurses’ awareness of attitudes and ethical considerations for medication safety.
