In my thesis I wanted to take a look if a traditional printed book is losing its glamour. Also it was important to investigate if the future of printed book is de-pending only to whether or not the book is turning digital. My thesis covers the-se questions through changes in people’s reading behaviors, which have modified the printed book format throughout the time.

Since the digital revolution has been going on so long there is plenty of former studies made on this field. For my main source material I have used Jari Paa-vinheimo’s book Digitaalisen ja painetun rajalla and Lauri Saarinen’s, Juri Joensuu’s ja Raine Koskimaa’s work Kirja 2010. As my research method I inter-viewed people who work at the heart of book industry.

The research shows that the printed book will remain most likely for a long time, but its status will be diluted by the changes in people’s reading habits. It is important to know that the printed book is only one page in book’s manifold format history. So at this moment the only option for printed book is to move on to the next format, which is digital. Digital format also changes our attitude to the text and literature itself very fundamentally The book will no more be a special artifact but a tool for getting the most advantage from it. I also investi-gate how the digitalization affects different types of literature.
